1963 Vee Jay label becomes first to release Beatles in the US, with Please Please Me backed with Ask Me Why (credited to Beattles).

1964 Cassius Clay becomes world heavyweight boxing champion. Within months he records cover version of Stand by Me.

1966 Yardbirds release Shapes of Things to Come.

1977 Polydor UK sign the Jam.

1981 Christopher Cross wins five Grammys for his first LP, a record for a debut album.

1983 Having won same category the previous year, Pat Benatar is awarded Grammy for Shadows of the Night.
